Coquet Vets’ RVN’s (Image: Coquet Vets)
At Coquet Vets, we currently have four Student Veterinary Nurses who are an important part of the team, providing direct animal care and clinical support under supervision as part of their training to become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). They also do administrative work and support the practice in specialist areas, such as radiography (X-rays) and laboratory administration tasks, such as taking blood tests and urine samples for diagnostic tests.
The month of May is ‘Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month’, so as a follow up to our “Meet our Registered Veterinary Nurses” article, we share a little more about each of our student nurses so you can get to know them better too!
Shannon Stewart – Student Veterinary Nurse
Shannon has a 5-year-old Husky called Loki. He has a lot of energy and likes to be out on very long walks. Their favourite place to go is the Lake District. If Shannon could have any animal as a pet, it would be a tiger. Her favourite cat and dog breeds are Maine Coons and Whippets.
Shannon's favourite thing about being a student nurse is helping the animals feel better and seeing them go home happy. If Shannon wasn't a student nurse, she would be a dog trainer.
Grace Common – Student Veterinary Nurse
Grace has five pets, four dogs, and one cat. They’re really friendly, full of personality, and have made her even more passionate about animal care. If Grace could invent anything to help animals in practice, it would be something that could instantly tell us exactly what’s wrong with an animal without causing them stress - like a non-invasive scanner that gives immediate, accurate results. It would make diagnosis quicker and improve patient care.
Grace’s favourite thing about being a student nurse is making a difference to an animal’s life, whether that’s helping them recover or making them more comfortable. It’s also really rewarding building trust with both patients and their owners.
Melissa Frater – Student Veterinary Nurse
Melissa has a 6-month-old Jack Russel Cross Norfolk Terrier called Lenny, who likes to dig and chew on socks! Their favourite thing to do together is to go on long beach walks. If she could have any animal, it would be an alpaca.
Melissa’s favourite thing about being a nurse is meeting owners and their pets, and she loves the consulting side of nursing. If Melissa wasn't a student nurse, she would be a maths teacher.
Megan – Student Veterinary Nurse
Megan is a university student nurse who has been with us for a year now. She is coming to the end of her training, and we wish her the best of luck!
Megan has a 13-year-old Cocker Spaniel called Lucy, who loves the beach. If Megan could have any animal as a pet, it would be a fox.
Her favourite thing about being a student nurse is seeing patients in all stages of life. Megan's favourite area of nursing is being in theatre as she loves how hands on this can be. If Megan wasn't a student nurse, she would love to have her own dog rescue centre.
