While fireworks can be exciting for us, the loud noises and bright flashes can be overwhelming for our pets. Dogs, cats and small animals may become frightened, anxious or unsettled, so it’s important to take a few simple steps to help them feel safe.
If your pet finds fireworks particularly difficult, please speak to one of our vets in advance. There are several ways we can help, and planning ahead can make a real difference.
Our top tips for a calmer firework season:
Stick to familiar routines. Keeping feeding times, walks and daily activities as normal as possible can help your pet feel more secure.
Make a cosy retreat. Set up a quiet, comfortable hiding place with blankets where your pet can escape the noise. A covered crate or cardboard box can make a great den, provided your pet can come and go safely.
Reduce the noise and flashes. Close windows, shut the curtains and switch on the television or radio before the fireworks begin to help disguise the sounds outside.
Plan walks carefully. Take your dog out earlier in the day, before fireworks are likely to start. Keep them on a lead and avoid evening walks during firework displays.
Keep your pets safe indoors. Make sure cats are inside before dark, and provide rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets with a secure, sheltered environment away from loud noises.
Let them feel safe. If your pet wants to hide, allow them to do so. Stay calm; lead by example and show your pet that you are not frightened or worried - and never tell them off for being scared.
Consider additional calming support. Here at Coquet Vets, we can advise you on suitable calming products, including diffusers, wipes and supplements for dogs and cats. If your pet experiences severe anxiety, our vets can discuss whether prescription medication may help.
