Whippets have been around since the 19th century. They were bred from Greyhounds and smaller dogs known as Italian Greyhounds. They became known as the "poor man's racehorse" because they were cheaper to feed than Greyhounds. Miners would often race and bet on them during their breaks.
Whippets typically live between 12 and 15 years.
Having owned many whippets growing up, I can confirm they are definitely perfect family dogs. They are very easy-going and affectionate.

Many people assume whippets need hours of exercise every day, but this is not always the case. Most of the time, they enjoy a quick run to burn off their energy, and then they are quite happy to spend the rest of the day sleeping.
I find that my own whippet, Sonic, enjoys plenty of enrichment activities at home. Whippets can be very sensitive dogs and can sometimes lack bravery when in unfamiliar places or situations, so I like to provide enrichment activities that help to boost his confidence.
I also find that Sonic loves to destroy things and use his prey drive, so I get him tug toys and toys that he can chase, chew and pull the stuffing out of - although there is always a trail of mess left afterwards!

Whippets also enjoy using their nose and sniffing, which for most dogs can really tire them out and calm them down if they are feeling overstimulated. I like to hide treats in the garden for Sonic so he can spend time sniffing and finding them. This not only keeps him occupied but also gives him a feel-good feeling when he gets the reward.
Whippets really are great companions for adventure lovers. Sonic enjoys hiking in the Lake District and taking trips in the campervan to explore new places.

Despite their adventurous side, whippets are equally fond of their home comforts.
Sonic loves any excuse to get under a blanket and keep warm. In fact, if I can't find him, that's usually the first place I look!
