Earlier this year, our vet Emily answered some fantastic questions from pupils at William Leech School. Now, our vet Sarah Haggie has stepped forward to answer even more imaginative and inquisitive questions, while also sharing insights into life as a veterinary professional. And for a bit of fun, Sarah has even asked her own dog, Stanley, a few questions too!

Q&A with Sarah Haggie, Veterinary Surgeon at Coquet Vets

Q: What is your favourite thing about your job?

Sarah: Helping animals.

Q: Do vets get homework?

Sarah: Yes, all the time. We often work late and spend time outside of work researching new medications and procedures.

Q: Why did you want to be a vet?

Sarah: To help animals.

Q: What is your greatest achievement?

Sarah: Being a vet.

Q: Do chickens jump?

Sarah:  Yes.

Q: Why does my goldfish have massive eyes?

Sarah: So that it can see underwater.

Q: What is the smelliest animal poo?

Sarah: Fox is the smelliest poop that my dog, Stanley, has rolled in so far.

Q: Why, when I have a staring competition with my goldfish he never blinks?

Sarah: He doesn’t have eyelids.

Q: Do animals try to escape when they see you?

Sarah: Yes, all the time! I wanted to be a vet because I love animals but most of them don’t love me!

Q: Why does my bunny’s nose twitch?

Sarah: Because he’s constantly sniffing and smelling things.

Q: Why do male rabbits pee when they jump?

Sarah:  I don’t think they all do? Maybe to spread their scent about.

Q: Have you ever fixed a cat’s broken bone?

Sarah:  I once put a pin in a cat’s back leg after it was hit by a car.

Q: Why does my dog have fluffy poos?

Sarah: Stanley gets fluffy pops when he’s been eating his cuddly toys (so I need to take them off him or stop him chewing them!)

And Now…Sarah’s Questions for Her Dog, Stanley!

Q: What is your favourite thing in life?

Stanley: My donut toys.

Q: Who is your best friend?

Stanley: Eddie (Lord Edward Teddington) and my girlfriend is Violet the Staffy.

Q: What are you most scared of?

Stanley: Strange people.

Q: What is your greatest achievement?

Stanley: Winning the Druridge Bay half marathon Canicross.

We loved reading all these imaginative questions from the pupils at William Leech School. Thank you to everyone who took part - and to Sarah and Stanley for answering all the questions! If your child has a question about animals or veterinary care, we’d be delighted to hear from you for next time.

Look out for our next “Ask a Vet Anything…” article later this year!
