Fireworks may be fun for us humans, but for many pets, they can be a source of real stress and anxiety. Loud bangs, flashing lights, and unfamiliar smells can be stressful for even the most confident of animals.
At Coquet Vets, we understand how distressing this time of year can be for both pets and their owners. That’s why we’ve put together some practical tips to help keep your furry friends calm, safe, and comfortable during fireworks season.
Top Tips to Reduce Firework Stress in Pets
Stick to your usual routine. Try to maintain your normal routine as much as possible, as even small changes can cause your pet extra apprehension and anxiety.
Create a safe hiding space. Provide a quiet, cosy area where your pet can retreat. A cardboard box or crate lined with lots of blankets is ideal, as it can help muffle noise and offer comfort.
Use sound as a distraction. Turn on the radio or TV at a moderate volume to help mask the sound of fireworks.
Do walks earlier in the day. Walk your dog earlier and for a bit longer to help tire them out before the evening.
Avoid walks after dark when fireworks are more likely. Walking before darkness will help to avoid any unexpected garden fireworks in your local area that may frighten your pet on their usual walking route.
Keep cats and small pets indoors. Cats and other small furries should be kept safely inside during firework displays.
Offer a slightly larger meal. A fuller tummy can help your pet feel a bit more sleepy.
Stay calm and reassuring. Avoid acknowledging your pet’s fearful behaviour and fussing over them if they seem frightened. Instead, stay calm and show your pet that there’s nothing to be scared of.
Consider calming aids. Speak to one of our team about natural calming tablets and sprays available for both dogs and cats.
We offer medication at Coquet Vets that can help to calm your pets during the firework season. If your pet needs prescription medication to stay calm, please contact us in advance. Some treatments take a few days to become effective.
Plan ahead and take advantage of our firework consultation with one of our vets. Over October to December, we are offering this consultation at a reduced charge of £25. To book an appointment, call us today on 01665 252 250.
