Case Study: Mouth Injury

Last month, our vet, Sarah, had an emergency appointment for a dog with something stuck in its mouth. Cara, a young cockapoo, was brought to us by her owners, who noticed she was pawing at her mouth. The owners were able to have a look in and could see that there was something at the top of her mouth.

We gave Cara a light sedative so our vet, Sarah, and our nurse, Rosie, could take a better look. Upon examination, there was a thin bit of wood stuck right at the top of her mouth. Our nurse, Rosie, held the mouth open while our vet, Sarah, used forceps to pull out the wood.

There was no trauma to Cara’s mouth after the stick was removed. She has been very lucky. Our vet, Sarah, gave her an injection for pain relief, and she went home later that day.

She has been back since with no issues.

This is just a reminder to not let your dog chew sticks or throw sticks where they can be caught in their mouths. Stick injuries can be very serious and easily avoided.
