We recently had a gorgeous 8-year-old cocker spaniel referred to us for a course of light therapy. This referral came after all other options to cure his lip fold dermatitis had failed.
Dexter's lip folds had developed pseudomonas and MRSP, which are highly contagious bacterial infections. His owner was worried that the only option left was potential surgery to remove the infected areas. However, after reading an article from Nottingham University, his owner did a bit of detective work and discovered that we perform light therapy here at Coquet Vets.
Dexter's own vet agreed to refer him to Coquet Vets for a course of light therapy as a last resort before surgery. This was a complimentary treatment alongside a course of antibiotics.
Dexter was nervous at first, but with time and lots of reassurance from his lovely owner, we managed to complete 3 weeks of therapy. This involved cleansing the lip fold and applying the special gel before using the lamp to activate the gel.
After only a few sessions, Dexter would come in, lie down to wait for his treatment, and be a star patient. At the end of his course of treatments, the lip folds were swabbed, and to the relief of his owner, the results came back completely clear of all infection.
